that 70s style

The 70s are a massive trend this s/s and was even quite prominent during the a/w except swap deep hues for colourful floral and paisley patterns. I am really into this trend and plan to mix it up with a bit of worn distressed denim (I don't think I could pull off flares!). I love outfits that take inspiration from certain era trends but I'm not a fan of outfits that look more like costumes, cause there's a difference, right?

Dreams weren't made to be small. Yes, they may be unrealistic and they may never happen but it's good to dream big. If I asked you what your dream fashion accessory would be, I would hope (and prey) that you would not tell me 'that black satchel from River Island' or 'this amazing pair of Chelsea boots from ASOS'. If that is your dream then you're lucky cause you're a million times more likely to reach yours than I am mine! 

Money isn't the most important thing to me. Pretty much everything comes before money (my family being the most important but also my friends) but it is also a big part of how we interact with those more important things and whether we like it or not, we, as society. are very focused on aesthetics and materialism. Naturally we are drawn to beautiful things. However, what we consider to be beautiful is another matter. One girls Prada is another girls Newlook...or should that be the other way around?

Movies for Fashion Lovers

I thought that after a few outfit posts I would write something a little different. I was thinking about what inspires me and what I really enjoy. Well, obviously, as a fashion blogger I love fashion but I also have really got into films over the last couple of years. I'm not a film buff. I don't have the lingo down. I haven't seen every single film known to mankind but, I am working my way through and although I may not have the most insightful things to say, I can promise you that if you love fashion...you will like these films.

I first saw this film last year and it's definitely now one of my favourites. This is obviously a great movie for fashion lovers as firstly it has one of fashions biggest icons, Audrey Hepburn and secondly, is set in New York where the character, Holly Golightly [read as Go Lightly], is obsessed with Tiffany's. Prepare yourself for easy glam and effortless style. Saying that, I'm sure Audrey Hepburn could look elegant in anything.

Do not underestimate this film. It is not your average rom-com, even my 25 year old brother likes it! The story is a really interesting look into the fashion industry and cleverly  depicts a character that is supposed to be based on American Vogue's editor, Anna Wintour (written by former employee, Lauren Weisberger). The fashion is amazing but my favourite thing is how it feels like you're a fly on the wall in the offices the of Vogue and Elle.

I love the Edwardian fashion in Titanic. The beautiful silhouettes of the women; back in the days when they wore corsets under their extravagant dresses. The jewellery. The wealth. The style. Titanic gives you a glimpse of Fashion before women began to exhibit their bodies. It was the decade before fashion became fashion. A time when, only the wealthy had style. As well as this, the story is beautiful and as you already know, tragic.

This film is quite simply a masterpiece.

The costumes are spectacular! spectacular!

The music is beautiful.

The story is tragic.

Moulin Rouge, directed by Baz Luhrmann, is one of my favourite films.

Please watch...

This is pure 90's American fashion. It's a real easy watch so don't expect a film that's gonna leave you with new thoughts and ideas to ponder over. It won't play on your mind. It is enjoyable though and definitely inspiring if you have any upcoming 90's parties or feel like getting into the 90's trend that seems to still be popular. 

Typical Baz Luhrmann and much like Moulin Rouge, this film is filled with glitz, sparkle, glamour and theatricals. Adapted from Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby, this film has everything a person could want from a film. A gripping storyline, characters your invest in and music that pulls you into the moment. Similarly, this also has everything a fashion and twenties lover could ask for. The woman are gamine and beautiful. The styling is exotic and dazzling. As a film, it is simply quite bewitching. 

Possibly one of the saddest films I have watched but wow, does the cinematography make it worth returning for. The writing, music and costumes are beautiful as is the scene where Kiera Knightly runs out of the house in her iconic silky green dress. This film leaves you with more than thoughts of fashion.

Adventures in the Cote d'azur

I totally forgot to mention in my last post, that I wouldn't be posting for a couple of weeks because I was going away on holiday to the South of France. Well I'm back now (as of yesterday evening) and as per usual, I'm feeling a mixture of emotions. It's nice being back and understanding signs and driving on the left side of the road but I'm missing the beautiful weather. It was practically blue skies and a minimum of 28 degrees everyday. Whereas England is more around the 20 mark and not quite as clear but I shouldn't moan cause it's actually pretty good weather for us. I'm gonna miss eating breakfast outside in the sunshine. Fresh croissants and coffee. But it's nice to have my room and my double bed back. Anyway, I thought I'd share a few pics of my holiday with you and then I'm gonna do a few separate post over the next couple of weeks of some of my favourite outfits and day trips from my holiday. 

The Maxi Skirt.

Yes, I am being somewhat more bold with my outfit posts at the moment. This is the outfit I wore on Sunday. It was a lovely day and I really fancied getting my maxi skirt out. I bought it last year in the Next sales for £16, it had been reduced down from £35 (or it may have been £30). I originally planned on buying it in emerald green but only the pink was left in the sale. I really love the side split in this skirt as I think it makes more young. Maxi skirts can look a little frumpy on me, so styling is key. Having recently bought this leather jacket (see post) and necklace, I wanted to team them with it and make it more edgy as opposed to girly.

Anyway, I am now back at uni which is great. It's also bizarre because courses are ending for the summer so loads of people have moved out of halls (it feels like only yesterday that we all moved in). My course has officially finished but I still have one assignment left so am hanging around until the end of may. It was great coming back on Tuesday and seeing friends again, so other than finishing my last assignment, all that's left is enjoying the last month of my year as a fresher! Only a month, wow.

Trend Report: Spring/ Summer 2013

Trend One: Floral Crazy

I debated whether I should include floral in my trend report…I’m sure most (if not all) of you know that floral is always a massive trend for Spring and Summer. It’s diverse, it’s simple and it cannot help but be effortlessly fashionable. If you follow my blog you will know that I LIVE out of floral print.

Tip: Seen as though this trend has been seen time and time again, be BOLD with it. Don’t play safe. Mix florals. Wear it head to toe. Most importantly, experiment with different items of clothing (don’t stick to that same maxi dress or sheer blouse!)

Topshop...for the quirky girls out there.

Next...for beautifully tailored items.

Trend Two: Triple Threat!

                 

Feminine, Flirty and Fierce. This trend is all about mixing and matching to showcase your fashion personality. Like to wear sheer blouses? How about a tough leather jacket? Maybe denim hot pants? Well this trends is the excuse you've been looking for to wear all three. 

Tip: You still need your fashion eye for this trend. It doesn't mean combine random items to make the worlds most bizarre outfit, you will get no street cred for that monstrosity. Instead be clever and use it as a chance to try out some new pieces together and possibly some different fabrics and cuts.

Who does it best? 

You (of course!)...you can't buy this style in a shop.

Trend Three: The Nineties Revival

This trend was massive last year, as I'm sure you all remember. Need some inspiration? How about a trip to the past with a few episodes of Saved By The Bell, Fresh Prince or Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Top tip: Awaken 90's fashion by all means, but try and leave the bushy 90's hair-do's buried deep. 

Who does it best?

Your older sisters old wardrobe...if you are like me and were a nineties baby, then it may be time to rummage through your sisters old clothes from the 90's, alternatively try a charity shop or a clothes sale?

Trend Four: BE BOLD!

Be Bold says it all, right? Colours, prints, fabrics, styles, shapes...this trend has it all going on. I sourced the photo (above) from ASOS where people can share photos of their outfits (much like blogging), problem is, I have no idea how to give credit to the owner. I don't wanna be a photo thief, so if the owner of the photo is reading this, I hope me posting your outfit is enough credit because it's bloody incredible and the only photo I could find to showcase how insanely cool this trend is.

Top tip: The tagline that keeps getting attached to this trend is, Go Bold or Go Home.

Trend Five: Art Attack

Think...Zany-Pop art-Novelty -Colourful -Reminiscent-Boldness. For me, this trend mixes well with both 'Be Bold' and 'The Nineties Revival' as it is all about standing out, being experimental and having a bit of fun with fashion, as well as this, it just happens that it also looks very 90's (see tie-dye above)

Top tip: This may be a chance to bring out some of your old clothes from hiding. Maybe that insane dress you bought three years ago that you never wore or that Minnie Mouse jumper you just had to have when you visited Disney Land last Summer.

Anywhere and everywhere...Try charity shops and some customisation to save on the pennies!
