how to wear a head scarf

how to wear a head scarf

fashion and beauty blog, vintage hair scarf

My  mother's lovely friend, who I've known since I was a kid, bought me the pretty floral hair scarf (you can see me wearing in this post) for my birthday and it got me thinking about the other ones tucked away in my room that I haven't worn in ages. I dug around and found two of my old favourites and decided to try them out.
Hair scarves can be difficult to tie. Often they slip off or loose their shape or just look like you've tied a cloth to your head but I find that the (amateur) method I use works really well for me. It stays in place, is comfortable and looks right to me.
the method
You can achieve this by placing the middle of the scarf under your hair (putting your hair up first can make it a little easier) and bringing up the ends to the part of your head you want it to sit. I like it to cover the part where my fringe/bangs meet the rest of my hair but if you don't have any, you could take it a little further back). Make a simple knot and then repeat. Take the ends and bring them back around under your hair and tuck in or tie if they are long enough. Secure with bobby pins of your hair is slipping. It's easier to do this with day old hair as opposed to freshly washed as it has more grip.
a tip
You can find these pretty hair scarves in practically every charity shop on the planet. They will be inexpensive and unique. I've picked most of mine up for as little as a couple of pound as opposed to the £5-10 you'll pay on high-street!

Happy Easter and Happy Sunday :)

lipsticks and legends

“The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you.”

When it comes to fashion, there are a select few icons us fashion bloggers love to quote. Maybe it isn't just fashion bloggers. Maybe it's just anyone who loves and lives fashion, cause fashion isn't something you choose to like, it's kind of something you just are. As Anna Wintour once said, You either know fashion or you don’t.”
We look up to these icons and take their words and we make them into legends. Maybe we do more than that. Maybe we make their words mean more than what they actually, or were ever meant to, mean. When Coco Chanel said, “I don't do fashion, I AM fashion” I doubt she spent much time thinking about those words and how people would take them and whether, nearly a century down the line, some twenty-one year old fashion blogger and aspiring writer would quote  and analyse if she meant them. I'd like to think it was just something she just said. Hopefully meant it when she said it. Nevertheless, it's a cool quote, right? It links well to when Anna Wintour said, “Fashion is not beautiful, neither is it ugly. Why should it be either? Fashion is Fashion”.
Saying that, and as silly as this sounds, sometimes I imagine myself being quoted in the future. Twenty or fifty or a hundred years from now when some form of futuristic media has overtaken the blogosphere, maybe a twenty-something girl (like myself now) will quote a line from one of my articles in her own. She'll have found it while browsing through the fashion magazine I dream of starting. She'll see something special in it. Even if no one else does, it would be nice for one person to.
The fact is, words can make people feel things. They don't date like fashion, or fade like photos, or age like people. If they're good enough, and mean something, they can almost become eternal. That seems precious to me. I guess that's why I love reading and why I want to be a writer.
Yes, you're right. What does this have to do with lipsticks? Not a lot, no, but when I first started writing this post this morning, I wanted to find a quote to accompany it. On finding one by Marilyn Monroe, it got me thinking about quotes and the power they have and then that (see above) happened.
The lipsticks above are my favourite. The ones I carry around with me every day, apart from my Chanel one which stays at home for special occasions. At least one will always match my outfit and really, that's all I need. I don't wear lipstick everyday but I like to have the option. It's great at making me feel good.

Let me know your thoughts on anything and everything I have said during this mixed up post!

hailes hearts tatty devine jewellery

tatty devine willow pattern drop earrings

Recently while browsing the Selfridges website, I came across a brand called Tatty Devine
and fell in love. Then a few weeks after, while reading one of my favourite blogs, I saw a post on them and then I started seeing them everywhere I went. It's like the universe, or something, wanted me to look through the website again. It just happened to be around the time I was writing my birthday list so I popped a couple of pieces I liked on it. I asked for this customised necklace and this pair of china drop down earings and then I totally forgot.

Fast forward a couple of months and I'm opening two little identical shaped presents concealing the coolest jewellery ever. As well as showing you my jewellery I thought I'd show you what I'm wearing today. This is a good example of my daily kind of outfit so what I wear to uni or to go shopping or just to pop into town for a coffee. It's quite boring but I always try and wear something colourful!

[Bag - Cambridge Satchel Company, Necklace - Tiffanys, Bracelet - Thomas Sabo, Top/Skirt/Kimono/Boots - All Newlook, Tights - Primark]

Yesterday was my fake 21st Birthday! I had my real birthday on the 26th of March but couldn't be at home because of uni. My mother and brother came to visit me for a few days but could only bring a couple of presents so yesterday I opened the rest, blew out the candles on my cake and went out for dinner with my family in Brighton!

I thought it'd be nice to show you what I wore for my fake birthday which just happened to include my lovely  navy Cambridge Satchel (as seen above) which I got for my birthday. I love that it has my initials on! I also wore my new Chanel lipstick and my lovely charm bracelet. I think I will do a post later this week on all the lovely new fashion related things I got for my birthday cause it seemed to be a real  theme this year. When in doubt, buy me something fashion related and I will be happy!

I can say with certainty that it was the best fake birthday ever. A nice day without the pressure of
OH-MY-GOD-TODAY-HAS-TO-BE-AMAZING-CAUSE-I-ONLY-GET-THIS-ONCE-A-YEAR!

Anyway, let me know what you think of my satchel and my outfit and I'd love to know whether you've ever had a fake Birthday?
