Trend Report: Spring/ Summer 2013

Trend One: Floral Crazy

I debated whether I should include floral in my trend report…I’m sure most (if not all) of you know that floral is always a massive trend for Spring and Summer. It’s diverse, it’s simple and it cannot help but be effortlessly fashionable. If you follow my blog you will know that I LIVE out of floral print.

Tip: Seen as though this trend has been seen time and time again, be BOLD with it. Don’t play safe. Mix florals. Wear it head to toe. Most importantly, experiment with different items of clothing (don’t stick to that same maxi dress or sheer blouse!)

Who does it best?
ASOS...for a wide range of sizes, styles and prices.
Topshop...for the quirky girls out there.
Next...for beautifully tailored items.

Trend Two: Triple Threat!

Feminine, Flirty and Fierce. This trend is all about mixing and matching to showcase your fashion personality. Like to wear sheer blouses? How about a tough leather jacket? Maybe denim hot pants? Well this trends is the excuse you've been looking for to wear all three.

Tip: You still need your fashion eye for this trend. It doesn't mean combine random items to make the worlds most bizarre outfit, you will get no street cred for that monstrosity. Instead be clever and use it as a chance to try out some new pieces together and possibly some different fabrics and cuts.

Who does it best?
You (of course!)...you can't buy this style in a shop.

Trend Three: The Nineties Revival

This trend was massive last year, as I'm sure you all remember. Need some inspiration? How about a trip to the past with a few episodes of Saved By The Bell, Fresh Prince or Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Top tip: Awaken 90's fashion by all means, but try and leave the bushy 90's hair-do's buried deep.

Who does it best?
Your older sisters old wardrobe...if you are like me and were a nineties baby, then it may be time to rummage through your sisters old clothes from the 90's, alternatively try a charity shop or a clothes sale?
ASOS...for some great quirky pieces, from distressed denim to oversized tee's!

Trend Four: BE BOLD!

Be Bold says it all, right? Colours, prints, fabrics, styles, shapes...this trend has it all going on. I sourced the photo (above) from ASOS where people can share photos of their outfits (much like blogging), problem is, I have no idea how to give credit to the owner. I don't wanna be a photo thief, so if the owner of the photo is reading this, I hope me posting your outfit is enough credit because it's bloody incredible and the only photo I could find to showcase how insanely cool this trend is.

Top tip: The tagline that keeps getting attached to this trend is, Go Bold or Go Home.

Who does it best?
ASOS...Most of the outfit above is from ASOS (enough said?)
Topshop...for the most eccentric prints and accessories.

Trend Five: Art Attack

Think...Zany-Pop art-Novelty -Colourful -Reminiscent-Boldness. For me, this trend mixes well with both 'Be Bold' and 'The Nineties Revival' as it is all about standing out, being experimental and having a bit of fun with fashion, as well as this, it just happens that it also looks very 90's (see tie-dye above)

Top tip: This may be a chance to bring out some of your old clothes from hiding. Maybe that insane dress you bought three years ago that you never wore or that Minnie Mouse jumper you just had to have when you visited Disney Land last Summer.

Who does it best?
Anywhere and everywhere...Try charity shops and some customisation to save on the pennies!

These are my picks of the top trends out there at the moment for Spring and Summer. It would be great to hear your thoughts and feel free to share any tips you may have.

Spring Fling!

This weekend has been great. One of the best this year. After a miserable Easter, in terms of weather, it was paradise to see the sun again and remember what it's like to feel warm. On Saturday (yesterday) me and my friends went to the local zoo for my 20th Birthday. It's a zoo that we all used to go to as kids so it was a bit of a blast from the past, in fact I think we seemed more excited than any of the little children that were visiting. I love these three photos of us all because firstly, I love what we are wearing and secondly, it's so sunny and looks like we are in Barbados as opposed to a little British zoo in the middle of the countryside.

Below is a phone snap of my outfit, you can see my denim shirt and my high-waisted floral skirt a little better, it's just a shame that the quality of the photo isn't as good.

Hope you all had a great weekend! What have you been up to?

Too much floral.

Marc Jacobs perfume, Marc Jacobs Daisy
(Vest top - Newlook, Cardigan - Newlook, Floral skirt - Primark)

Cath Kidston bag

I think it's safe to say, life isn't a lot different as a twenty year old. In fact, everything is exactly the same. I had a lovely birthday on Tuesday but sadly was ill that evening and am only starting to feel better today (hopefully I don't regress). For my birthday I got a bottle of perfume (Daisy by Marc Jacobs!), a beautiful Cath Kidston bag, lots of baking stuff and a H&M stocking (basically a gift bag filled with little things from H&M due to my mothers current obsession with them!), two Agatha Christie novels and some Midori.

As you may already know, I love to do trend reports, so over the next few days I will be doing a report on Spring/Summer 2013. I was reluctant to do a trend report on Spring as we have already "technically" entered the season but Spring is practically no existent in the UK right now so I think I can get away with it!

Thanks for reading,

Birthdays, breakdowns and bucket lists.

Me (on the far right) on my birthday night out at Uni with two of my friends! (I do not own this photo)
Tomorrow is my birthday. Tomorrow I turn twenty. This very fact has caused me to have a slight breakdown over the last few weeks, with thoughts such as "Shit, I am no longer a teenager" and "Duuuude, I really need to sort my life out." You see, people tell me that the twenties will be the best years of my life which will make me put an immense amount of pressure on myself to have fun over the next ten years (only ten years until I am thirty?!) and to make the most out of it all. It's clichéd but I often find myself wondering where all the years have gone? Time seems to have flown by and I don't want the next ten years to go as quickly as the last twenty have. You see, my mum got married when she was twenty one and had her first child when she was twenty three. Admittedly  I am at university and I have big plans for my career so starting a family isn't really on the agenda just yet but it makes me feel like I need to start planning my life and where I am heading. So I thought I would make a little bucket list of ten things I want to do/ achieve in the next ten years (before I turn thirty)...

  1. Get my degree (preferably a 2:1+)
  2. Do a years working visa in Australia
  3. Get a job in Fashion Journalism
  4. Get married or engaged
  5. Travel to New York, Paris and Tokyo
  6. Attend London Fashion Week
  7. Have decent, respectable, grown up fingernails (mine are currently hideous)
  8. Be able to drive and own a car
  9. Have a published novel
  10. Own a designer bag (a Mulberry Alexa satchel, please?)
Saying this, I know that turning twenty is a good thing, I just find age a scary thing at times. Anyway, I shall tell you all about my birthday in my next post - wish me luck!

"It's written on my T-Shirt so it must be true."

NERD.
An 'individual', i.e. a person who does not conform to society's beliefs that all people should follow trends and do what their peers do.

Tee - Newlook £9.99, Cardigan - Newlook £17.99, High Waisted Skirt - George £3 (sale)

Isn't it funny that nerd used to have so many negative connotations (see top of post) connected with it? I think pretty much every single film I've watched set in an American High School has some unfortunate student being heckled with this word. You know, the kid wearing big framed glasses and holding a stack of books? Nerd seems to be an interchangeable word, easily swapped with geek, freaks
and dork (there's probably more but I'm tired and my brain has decided that it's had enough of thinking). Anyway, back to my original point. People (yes me!) now purposefully spend their precious cash on a T-Shirt with NERD written across it, simply because it's fashion. Do they even like it? Well I actually do. I have to say, I wasn't keen to start with but like most things in fashion, I get used to it and slowly grow to like it...and then buy into it. It's a vicious cycle. But yes, there have been a few exceptions. Some trends I could never get to grips with. Harem pants were never and will never be cool, tie-dye should stay lost in the past and, dare I say, bushy brows make me squirm and I don't recognise them as a trend because everyone should pluck their eyebrows! Back to the tops...after a few months of being exposed to them throughout the high-street, I finally gave in. There is something cute about them and nothing beats a cool tee tucked into a high waisted skirt, right? Well that's how I'll style mine.

The picture above was quickly snapped before I left for my lecture but I wanted you to be able to see my tee properly. I'd love to know your opinion on these tops and if you own one?
